Chief Tabby Statue to Be Unveiled on Memorial Day in Heber City

Community members are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25 at 9:00 a.m., for the unveiling of a new statue honoring Chief Tabby-to-Kwanh at the Heber City Columbarium.

The ceremony will commemorate the life and legacy of Chief Tabby-to-Kwanh, a respected leader of the Ute people whose influence and presence shaped the early history of the Heber Valley and surrounding regions. The event will include brief remarks, a dedication of the statue, and an opportunity for the public to reflect on the enduring impact of Chief Tabby’s leadership.

A Legacy Rooted in the Valley

Chief Tabby-to-Kwanh, often known simply as Chief Tabby, was a prominent Ute leader in the 19th century. He played a significant role during a time of profound transition, as settlers moved into the Utah Territory and long-established Indigenous ways of life were disrupted.

Known for his diplomacy and efforts to maintain peace, Chief Tabby navigated complex relationships between his people and incoming settlers. Historical accounts describe him as a leader who sought coexistence during a period marked by tension and change. His presence in the Heber Valley remains a meaningful part of the area’s heritage, representing both the deep Indigenous roots of the land and the complicated history that followed.

The statue stands as a tribute not only to Chief Tabby himself, but to the broader history and cultural legacy of the Ute people in Utah.

Honoring History on Memorial Day

While Memorial Day is traditionally a time to honor those who have served and sacrificed, the unveiling offers a moment to reflect more broadly on the individuals who shaped the region’s story. Organizers hope the memorial will encourage education, dialogue, and respect for the diverse histories that define the Heber Valley.

“This is an opportunity for our community to come together, remember, and acknowledge a significant figure whose story is deeply connected to this place,” organizers shared. “We hope the statue serves as a lasting symbol of reflection and respect.”
